Waste often needs to be sorted and separated prior to recycling. This means separating the PVC from other plastics and other types of waste, and dispatching the different waste categories to different places. This operation is usually undertaken by waste management companies.

Many sorting centres still utilise manual techniques, but automated sorting is becoming increasingly sophisticated with modern production lines capable of discriminating between different materials, different types of plastics and even different colours of the same plastic.
